'Da Vinci Code' becomes Sony's best ever overseas release

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - "The Da Vinci Code," the film based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel, has become Sony Pictures' best ever overseas release with 453 million dollars in ticket sales, the studio said. In total the film, which has sparked global controversy, has raked in 642 million dollars worldwide, including 189 million dollars in North America, Steve Elzer of Sony Pictures told the AFP. The film, a conspiracy tale surrounding the supposed marriage of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene, has ignited polemic and was banned from theaters for violating religious ethics in India, China, and Pakistan.
